Date :Définition
A colorless crystalline solid salt, m.p. 255 °C (491 °F), soluble in water and a powerful oxidizing agent. When heated above the melting point, it decomposes to form NaCl and oxygen or sodium perchlorate, NaClO4; when treated with an acid, it may explode due to the formation of unstable chlorine dioxide. It can be formed by the action of chlorine on a hot solution of NaOH, but the principal process is the elctrolysis of a cooled solution of sodium chloride in a cell with graphite anodes and steel cathodes. The resultant solution of NaClO3 and residual NaCl is fractionally crystallized to separate pure sodium chlorate.
Note :
It is used as a source of chlorine dioxide for bleaching paper pulp and other materials; as a source of sodium perchlorate by further electrolysis; as a herbicide and defoliant; in matches, explosives, flares and pyrotechnics; and in the manufacture of other chlorates, such as KClO3. It must be handled carefully to avoid reaction with reducing or organic material, which can lead to fire and explosion.
