Date :Définition
An inorganic compound having the formula AlCl3; it is usually in the form of solid crystals which vaporize at about 190 °C (370 °F). When dissolved in water, it reacts energetically, evolving hydrogen chloride. Precaution should be observed in handling aluminum chloride in the presence of moisture. It is made by reacting chlorine with molten aluminum. One of its most important chemical properties is its ability to act as an electron acceptor; thus, it catalyzes condensation reactions between aliphatic and aromatic compounds involved in the production of ethylbenzene (an intermediate in styrene production), alkyl benzenes (detergents), and such pharmaceuticals as phenolphthalein. These are known as Friedel-Crafts reactions, after the names of their discoverers.
Note :
The use of aluminum chloride as a catalyst was important in the manufacture of synthetic rubbers in the United States during World War II. It also is a catalyst of reactions involved in petroleum refining such as cracking, isomerization, and polymerization of aliphatic compounds.
