Any of a group of organic polymers containing fluorine and having a number of exceptional properties, among which are relatively high heat resistance, permitting them to be used at temperatures of 260 °C (500 °F) or more; resistance to electricity and to attack by chemicals, oxidation, and severe environmental conditions. They are also nonflammable and nontoxic. Examples are polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polychlorotrifluoroethylene. All are thermoplastic and are available in several forms.
Note :
Their uses include numerous types of high-temperature service (insulation and nonstick coatings for cooking utensils, steam packing, etc.).
