An unstable form of carbon in which the carbon atom has only six valence electrons instead of the normal eight. This results in a positively charged carbon ion which is an extremely active reaction intermediate in, for example, catalytic cracking of petroleum and many aromatic reactions. The carbonium ion is one of the most important of such unstable initiators, others being free radicals and carbenes.
