An organic intermediate and analytical reagent derived from nitrobenzene by reduction or electrolysis; its formula is NH2(C6H4) 2NH2. Besides its value in organic synthesis, it is used in police work to identify blood spots, as a stain for microscopic specimens, and as a source of orange, red, and yellow azo dyes. It has also been used to impart temporary stiffness to unvulcanized rubber mixtures to maintain their shape until cured.
