A hygroscopic liquid used to maintain constant moisture content in materials with which it is mixed or associated. Common types are glycerol, some glycols, sorbitol. etc.

Humectants are used chiefly in tobacco, as a top dressing on leather and plastic products, in textile products, and in cosmetic preparations (skin creams and lotions).
