Date :Définition
An element. State: Gas; Group: VIIA; Atomic No.: 9; Atomic Wt.: 18.9984; Valence: 1. The most reactive member of the halogen family, fluorine exhibits strong attraction for electrons. Its outer shell contains seven electrons, which accounts for its tendency to acquire an eighth electron to complete the shell; for this reason, it is extremely electronegative. Its oxidation state is-1. Thus, it combines easily with other elements (except helium, neon, and argon) to form fluorides, fluorocarbons, etc. It is a vigorous oxidizing agent and therefore is a fire hazard in the presence of combustible materials.
Note :
Fluorine occurs naturally in the ores cryolite (Na3AlF6) and fluorspar (CaF2) and is also made by electrolytic process from hydrogen fluoride. It is available commercially as a compressed gas, b.p. -188 °C (-308 °F), and as a liquid. It is used for manufacture of fluorine-containing chemicals, including refrigernats, propellants, and polymers. Fluorine is a dangerously toxic and corrosive substance and should be handled and stored with great caution. It has the highest bactericidal activity of all the halogens; it is classed as a bone-seeking element, which accounts for its use in drinking water and toothpastes (as fluoride).
