An element. State: solid; group: IIIB (lanthanide series); atomic no.: 61; atomic wt.: 147(?); valence: 3. A radioactive rare-earth metal; its longest-lived isotope (145) has a half-life of 18 years. The element has been isolated only in trace quantities. The 147 isotope with half-life of 2.6 years is the only one that has practical use, as in luminescent coatings for instrument dials and as a power source for semiconductor solar batteries for space use.
Note :
Promethium forms only a few compounds, which are of chiefly theoretical interest.
