Derived from the latin word for "grating", the term clathrate describes unique type of solid mixture in which an atom or molecule of one substance (for example, argon) is entirely enclosed within the crystal lattice of another compound, the only attraction between them being relatively weak, such as hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces.
Note :
Clathrate structures known as gas hydrates can be formed with water and several gases, e.g., bromine, propane, and hydrogen sulfide. Urea can from clathrates with aliphatic compounds. Clathrate structures are often called "cage" complexes, adducts, or inclusion complexes. They are useful in chemical separation processes such as desalination of dea-water, petroleum refining, etc.
