A widely occurring earthy material containing metals of the rare-earth series, especially cerium and lanthanum, in the form of phosphates.
Note :
Though frequently referred to as a "sand," it contains very little silica. It occurs in economically important amounts in Australia, India, South Africa, Brazil, Florida, and several states of the Northwest: minor quantities are found in Egypt and the isaland southeast of Asia.
