  Définition

  An aromatic hydrocarbon, m.p. 179 °C (354 °F), composed of five fused rings, with formula C₂₀H₁₂. It has been found to be a strong carcinogen, and its presence in cigarette tars is one of the reasons for the broad concern over smoking as a cause of lung cancer, particularly when inhalation is involved. The concentration, though extremely low, is sufficient to be dangerous on a chronic basis.
