A monohydric alcohol, b.p. 169 °C (336 °F), with formula CH3COCH2C(CH3)2OH. It is derived from acetone by a condensation reaction and has a wide spectrum of solvent applications; these include extraction of numerous organic products, preparation of nitrocellulose lacquers and other cellulosic coating compositions, cleaning mixtures for metals, and stripping dyes from textiles. It has a moderate degree of toxicity and should not be inhaled or used internally. It is also quite flammable and should not be used near open flames or spark sources.
