Its existence as a decay product of actinium was discovered in 1939 by the french scientist Marguerite Perey (1910-1975). Its longest-lived isotope (223) is the only one that occurs naturally, with a half-life of 21 minutes. It forms no compounds. Francium is the haviest of the alkali metal group.
