A deliquescent white powder produced from sewater and used as a source of magneisum (by electrolysis). MgCl2 melts at 708°C (1297°F) and its hydrate. MgCl2 . 6H2O, loses water above 100°C (212°F), but also hydrolyzes by the reaction: MgCl² . 6H2O MgO + 2HCl + 5H2O, so the anhydrous form cannot be made by drying the hydrate.
Note :
It is a useful fireproffing and extinguishing material and also has numerous applications in the textile industry. It has some use as a catalyst and precipitant for solids, as well as in special cements, and has mild disinfectant action.
