The monomer unit of rubber hydrocabon (polyisoprene); it belongs to the classification of terpenes. It is a liquid, b.p. 34 °C (93 °F), having the molecular formula C5H8 ((...)).
A constituent of natural rubber and a starting material for a number of synthetic resins.Note :
It also is the chemical basis for many other terpene hydrocarbons containing from two to eight C5 Units (C10H16,C15H24, etc.). All these are formed in plants, occurring in essential oils, turpentine, pinene, and carotenoids. The synthesis of isoprene, which led to the manufacture of synthesis "natural" rubber, was established about 1940.
