  An aliphatic alcohol containing from 8 to 20 carbon atoms in the chain; they are derived from natural sources by reduction, hydrolysis, or hydrogenation and may be saturated (octyl and stearyl) or unsaturated (oleyl and linoleyl).

  Those having more than 12 carbons in the molecule are solids.
