Date :Définition
A reaction of great value and importance in organic chemistry in which hydrogen is added to the molecules of hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and the like, usually by means of a catalyst. Gasoline may be made by hydrogenation of coal, with tin or iron as catalyst, and many vegetable and fish oils are converted to solid form by hydrogenation with a nickel catalyst.
Note :
Destructive hydrogenation, in which organic molecules are split into smaller one capable of reacting with hydrogen, occurs in catalytic hydrocracking of gasoline (hydrogenolysis). Reactions of hydrogen with inorganic materials are not considered as hydrogenation.
