Date :Définition
A hydrocarbon in which the carbon skeleton is in the form of a chain with one or more branches, rather than a continuous line, as in a straight hydrocarbon. Many hydrocarbons can occur in branched or straight chain forms, eg butane.
Note :
The proportions of straight chain and branched hydrocarbons in an engins fuel are of great importance. For the compression ignition, or diesel engine, a fuel with a high proportion of straight chain hydrocarbons is required. On the other hand, for the spark ignition engine the fuel must have resistance to detonation, and the proportion of branched chain hydrocarbons should be high.

- branched chain hydrocarbon
