In the United States, a form of paper money in circulation from 1865 to 1933. The certificate represented gold bullion that fully secured the certificate. From 1933 to 1955, gold certificates were issued, in a revised form, only to Federal Reserve Banks for reserve purposes. Since 1955, the reserves have been indicated only by bookkeeping entries in a record known as the Interdistrict Settlement Fund.
