((Said of)) an organic containing an asymmetric carbon atom, which has the property of turning the plane of polarized light to the right; such compounds usually exist in the form of so-called optical isomers, one of which is dextrorotatory and the other levorotatory, the latter turning the plane of polarized light to the left.

Many sugars and some alcohols exhibit these optical properties, e.g., dextrose and levulose derive their names from this phenomenon. Dextrorotatory is indicated either by the italic letter d prefixed to the name, or by a plus sign (+); levorotatory isomers are indicated by italic l, or by a minus sign (-). The use of + and - signs is now preferred.
