An oxidation that takes place spontaneously in a substance exposed to air or oxygen at temperatures below 150 °C (300 °F). It is activated by a free radical chain mechanism (autocatalysis) and is characteristic of many hydrocarbons; thus it is applied to a number of industrial operations in the chemical industry, such as the production of acetone and phenol from cumene.
Note :
Autoxidation also is responsible, at least in part, for development of rancidity in food products, the drying of certain types of vegetable oils, the formation of "gum" in petroleum products, and the deterioration of vulcanized rubber.
