The stabilization of colloidal solution (called sols) by means of a so-called electric double layer of absorbed ions, derived either from a small amount of added electrolyte (peptizing agent) or from water (hydroxyl ions).
Note :
This results in a liquefying or softening action; the term peptization was applied to it by analogy with the digestive action of pepsin on proteins. It is considered to be a form of aggregation.
