In a full-rigged ship the bunt of the topsails was frequently so heavy and voluminous that a BUNT-JIGGER was fitted to the sails to assist the men on the yards in furling them. This was a small tackle of two single blocks by means of which the bunt of the sail was hauled up to the yard so that the gaskets could be secured. BUNTLINES, ropes attached to the footropes of the square sails, were also fitted in the larger sailing vessels and led up through blocks attached to the yards. When hauled up they spilled the wind out of the sails for reefing or hoisted them right up to the yards for furling. BUNTERS, the topmen working in the centre of the yards who gather in the bunt when furling sails. BUNT-FAIR, said of a square-rigged ship when sailing before the wind.
