Date :Définition
The removal of metal by the action of abrasive grains, which are embedded in a soft matrix or attached to the surface of a wheel or an endless belt.
Note :
If the abrasive is loosely applied in the operation, the latter is usually known as budding; the basic materials that can be used in polishing are many, including leather and canvas; the former is often used cemented to wooden wheels, while both leather and canvas may be cut into the shape of discs and sewn or glued together; emery - in grades from coarse powder to emery flour - is the commonest abrasive for all types of polishing, but diamond dust has found favour, since its use reduces polishing time and produces an excellent surface finish; it is usually used in the form of a paste in which the diamond dust is dispersed in a mixture of stearic acid and a glycol; in metallographic work specimens are polished prior to microscopic examination; electrolytic polishing is used as a commercial process as well as for metallographic applications; in the latter the ground specimen is made the anode in an electrolytic cell, the electrodes being only 3-5 cm. apart; a suitable electrolyte is selected for each metal.
