The Panathenaic amphora which was extremely large, was filled with oil and presented to victors of the Panathenaic games, part of a festival held every four years in Athens in honour of the Goddess Athena. The decoration followed a fixed pattern : with Athena on one side and on the other the contest for which the prize was given such as race or other games. It bears an inscription : I am a prize from the games at Athens.
