A person has a right to the enjoyment of his reputation and of the moral and material advantages to which it may entitle him in his relationships with other people - including ((...)) "the opportunities of receiving respectful consideration from the world". Any imputation which tends to infringe this right is defamatory.
Note :
It is important to notice that the plaintiff in an action of defamation need not show that the imputation has in fact damaged his reputation, but only that it has a tendency to do so. Once he has established such a tendency he is entitled to damages.
