Définition :
Méthode de traitement de la schizophrénie par injections massives d'insuline destinées à abaisser le taux de sucre dans le sang et à plonger le sujet dans un coma artificiel. Le malade est sorti de son coma par des injections de sérum glucosé.
Notes :
Une cure complète comporte de 10 à 50 comas de plusieurs heures chacun.
La cure de Sakel, après avoir été pendant vingt ans la méthode de choix, semble de plus en plus abandonnée et réservée à des cas qui ont résisté à d'autres traitements.

Note :
Sufficient insulin is injected to produce unconsciousness, the dosage being carefully regulated during the course of treatment. When a deep coma is achieved, the patient is brought out of the comatose condition by the administration of glucose followed by a meal rich in carbohydrates.
