A system of visual signaling (as between ships) in which the sender holds a flag in each hand and moves his arms to different positions according to a code alphabet.
Notes :
This method of signaling is an old favorite of the Navy ((...)). In a diagram showing all the letters, the left-hand figure represents a mechanical set of arms, usually electrically - operated and the right-hand the manual method of signaling.
It became a universal code, widely used at sea by ships of all nations, either by means of (...) or by hand flags used as an extension of a signalman's arms. It still remains a simple, rapid, and reliable means of communication within visual range.Termes :
