An element. State: solid; group: VIA; atomic no., 84; atomic wt.: 210; valence: 2, 4, 6. Polonium is a radioactive element; the 210 isotope is the only form produced commercially; it emits alpha particles. It is produced by irradiation of bismuth with neutrons, with subsequent chemical treatment and concentration. It is a silvery crystalline metal, m.p. 254 °C (489 °F), which resembles lead and bismuth in physical properties more than it does tellerium the element above it in the periodic table.
