Moisturizing and emolliency are marketing terms with little or no scientific meaning. These terms usually refer to skin, while conditioning is reserved for the hair. Consumers have come to regard moisturizing as actively increasing the water content of the skin. Emolliency is perceived passively as imparting softness and lubrication. Cosmetic chemists tend to think of a moisturizer as any material that relieves the roughness of dry skin. Emollients are regarded as occlusive moisturizers that help hydrate the skin by occluding the surface and conserving water in the stratum corneum.
