It has the highest electrical conductivity of any metal and thus is widely used in electrical circuitry. It has antiseptic properties which are utilized in medicine and dentistry, and it plays an essential part in the formation of photographic images. Other applications are in special batteries, alloys, and linings for chemical equipment. Silver forms compounds with the halogen elements, oxygen, and nitrogen. The light-sensitive halides are used in photography; the iodide is effective in atmospheric nucleation for rain-making. Many silver compounds are highly explosive (acetylide, peroxide, nitride, and permanganate), and the greatest caution should be observed in handling them. Sterling silver contains about 7% copper.
