The compounds so formed contain the acetate group CH3COO. Reaction (2) is known as esterification.
In the case of cellulose, reaction with acetic anhydride forms cellulose acetate, the most important of all acetates, especially for synthetic fibers, films, and plastics; when the reaction is complete, three hydroxyl groups of the cellulose are esterified (cellulose triacetate). Other compounds of this type are vinyl acetate, from which polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol are made, and ethyl acetate (a lacquer solvent).Terme :
