A steel which has been subjected to hardening.
Note :
((...)) a heating and quenching process applicable to certain iron-base alloys; these are heated and quickly quenched from a temperature within, or above, the critical temperature range for the purpose of producing a hardness greater than that obtainable when the alloy is not quenched; it is usually restricted to the formation of martensite; change of properties as a result of heat-treatment is not confined to ferrous alloys; hardening can occur with any alloy in which a change in solubility of a constituent in the basis metal takes place; alloys of the duralumin type when quenched from about 500 °C will slowly harden if allowed to stand at ordinary temperatures for several days; this is known as age-hardening; the process can be accelerated by heating up to about 160 °C and this is known as artifical age-hardening; both processes are included under the title "precipitation hardening"; non-heat treated allows may develop increased hardness by cold-working.
