The chiffonnier, which was a tall chest of drawers, was essentially a feminine piece of furniture. The name is derived from the French term chiffonnier meaning a collector of scraps or odds and ends. It was given to this piece of furniture in which the ladies kept their work, such as needlework and cuttings of cloth. The chiffonnier, which rested on a base with very short legs, was about four to five feet in height, and was generally fitted with five and occasionally six drawers of equal depth. It was of costly workmanship and was principally made of rosewood or violet ebony. The chiffonnier was introduced around the middle of the 18th century and retained its popularity through the Empire style.
