An armed private ship bearing the commission of the sovereign power to cruise against the commerce or warships of an enemy. A privately owned vessel armed with guns which operated in time of war against the trade of an enemy.
Notes :
Such a vessel was commissioned by letters of marque, which licensed her to take prizes intime of war, and which served both as official letters of reprisal and bonds of good behaviour. All nations adopted this method of commerce destruction until privateering was abolished by the Declaration of Paris in 1856. French privateers were most active privateers were far more numerous than naval ships in the War of American Independence (1775-1782) and the war of 1812-1814. In the American Civl War (1861-1865) both sides preferred to arm merchantmem as regular warships than to commission privateers. By The Hague Convention of 1907 it was agreed that such ships must be listed as warships though the right to arm merchantmen in self defence is still admitted.
((...)) privateers may perhaps be considered as the strategic predecessors of submarines, when used, as in the First and Second World Wars, in operations against the merchant shipping of an enemy state.Terme :
