Définition :
Alcaloïde du peyotl (Lophophora williamsii) doté de propriétés hallucinogènes, ce qui a fait proposer son utilisation comme agent d'exploitation pharmacodynamique.
Notes :
La mescaline se trouve à l'état naturel dans divers cactus et plus particulièrement dans le peyotl. Synthétisée en 1919, elle se présente sous forme de cristaux.
((Cet)) alcaloïde, extrait d'une Cactée mexicaine, ((sert)) à préparer des breuvages enivrants dans les cérémonies rituelles chez certains peuples autochtones. La mescaline, qui a été obtenue par synthèse et qui est responsable de l'état d'ivresse par le peyotl, entraîne des hallucinations visuelles remarquables par leur vivacité, la richesse de leurs couleurs.

The alkaloids in the cactus were first identified in 1886 by Louis Lewin, a German pharmacologist. Like the amphetamines, mescaline belongs to the amine group. Its chemical structure distantly resembles norepinephrine, which is, in turn, a close relation of adrenalin (epinephrine). Both are mind-altering chemicals which are manufactured in the body and which have activating upon certain tissues and organs.
