  Définition

  A state of matter intermediate between amorphous and crystalline, sometimes designated by the terms mesophase and mesomorphic.

  Notes :

  The most common examples are cholesterol derivatives.
  
  Materials of this nature combine the properties of liquids and crystals, that is, they have fluidity but at the same time have optical properties associated with crystal structures. They are known to occur in such biological forms as muscles and nerves. Liquid crystals have some applications in medicine, as well as in electronics, especially in color television tubes.
