Molybdenum, m.p. 2610 °C (4730 °F), occurs as the sulfide ore molybdenite, chiefly in Western U.S. and Canada and in Chile. It has the highest melting point of any metal except tungsten and tantalum and has strong thermal and electrical conductivity. It also readily forms coordination or complex compounds. In elemental form its chief uses are in steels, to which it imparts toughness for heavy service, and in heat-resistant alloys. Its compounds have applications in grease lubricants and pigments and as catalysts. Molybdenum is necessary in trace amounts in plant nutrition and is also valuable in human metabolism. Neither the metal nor its compounds is considered harmful.
