Nylon has many advantageous properties, among which are strength, resistance to heat and abrasion, colorability, noncombustibility, and nontoxicity. Its uses are manifold, though its textile applications predominate in the form of fibers for carpets, cordage, tire cord, twine, hosiery, and suitings. As a plastic, it is made in many forms by molding and machining; among these are gears, bearings, and other machine components, piping, brush bristles, insulation, and shoe heels. Its lack of toxicity makes it the material of choice for surgical inserts in the body, prosthetic devices, etc.
