It holds the upper sheaves of the cat purchase which is used to draw the anchor up to the cathead, a process known as "catting the anchor". Since the invention of the stockless anchor, which is now almost universal in its use except in the few square-rigged ships still in commission, ships no longer have these large catheads, or need to cat their anchors before letting them go. But when a large ship secures to a mooring buoy with her cable, she first secures her anchor to a clump cathead where it remains hanging while the cable is in use to hold the ship to the buoy.
