A tuberculous infection of the kidney parenchyma usually of haematogenous origin.
Note :
The infection may remain dormant or progress very slowly over a period of years. Eventually it reaches the medulla via the renal tubules and becomes active and rapidly progressive, spreading to the ureters, bladder and contralateral kidney. The main clinical features are intermittent pyuria and haematuria, and low-grade fever. In the absence of secondary infection, the urine yields no growth on ordinary culture although tubercle bacilli may be identified in concentrates.
