May occur in disorders causing obstruction to the bladder outflow tract, inflammatory disease of the bladder, and disease involving the ureteric orifices. Is common in young children and is often idiopathic. Associated with high incidence of pyelonephritic scarring. Tends to promote the continuation of urinary infection. In childhood, has tendency to disappear as growth proceeds.
