The atmospheric condition in which the temperature within a vertical layer of air increases with altitude, resulting in a very stable atmosphere until the inversion lifts or breaks.
Note :
This is contrary to the usual situation in which temperature decreases with height. Temperature inversions at the earth's surface are a common occurrence in the early morning hours during the fire season and dampen fire behaviour.
