The Canadian segment of the Appalachian Orogen encompasses an area of approximately 106 km², of which only one-third is presently above the (sic) sea level. To the northwest, the Orogen is bounded by the crystalline Canadian Precambrian Shield with fringing, gently folded to flat-lying Paleozoic carbonates. To the southeast, the limit of the Orogen is covered by the Atlantic Ocean and submarine Cenozoic and Mesozoic sediments of the continental shelves and slopes of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
