Thrust faults are readily recognized because older rocks generally rest on younger rocks. It is apparent, however, that under certain conditions younger rocks may be thrust over older rocks.
In contrast to a simple reverse fault, which rises up diagonally from not too far away, the thrust fault is a tangential movement of long-distance transport on a horizontal, gently inclined, or ondulating plane. It is this movement that leads to the origin of nappes.Termes :
