When a passage cannot be safely run on the paddle, the boat can sometimes be worked through it empty, with the paddlers guiding it from shore with the painters. For example, a quick succession of sharp drops over ledges could be, because of the rock configuration, impossible to take on the paddle, yet easy to linenext to shore. When lining a boat, be wary of letting it get broadside to the current, since a pull on the painter can then capsize it quickly. If it does begin to turn, a timely gentle snubbing on the upstream painter may straighten it out and ward off trouble; if not, try to let it ride down to where the current is weaker or where it can be pulled in a more favorable direction.
