In tracking upstream, the classic technique is for the two paddlers to walk along the bank, letting the bow angle slightly out toward midstream as they haul the canoe upriver. In tracking up very fast water, the most serious problem usually happens when the current suddenly catches the bow, and the boat goes charging off toward midstream. Completely releasing the tension on the stern line may fail to correct this, as your canoe continues away from you on a journey of its own. Corrective action must be immediate : usually the bow line must be abandoned completely, and the canoe retrieved by the stern after a wild swing downstream. With experience, you learn to avoid such situations. Trying to move too quickily upstream often makes the canoe head off broadside. Trimming the boat well down at the stern (downstream end) will help avoid this, too.
