Normally made with a round head for an attractive external appearance with ribs or flats on the shank to prevent turning when the bolt is tightened. Some versions require a prepunched square hole; others are pressed into place.
Carriage bolts are supplied with nuts unless otherwise specified. A common style is the round-head, square-neck carriage bolt with a shaped neck that can be either pressed into a soft material or fitted into a punched hole. But another version of the carriage bolt places a pair of fins, sometimes called lugs, under the head and pointing downward to achieve the same purpose.
