Burning capacity of tobacco. It can be determined a) by the conventional broker's method, the so-called burning test with a burning cigar or with a candle flame: b) by the laboratory method, the so-called determination of burning capacity (glowing test with glowing wire or carbon rod). The leaves of good alkaline tobaccos should have a very good glowing capacity (because they are free from sugar). The glowing capacity in the leaf of good acid tobaccos becomes worse with increasing sugar content.
Burning capacity of the cigarette paper: we distinguish highly combustible, combustible, semi-combustible and non-combustible papers. The degree of burning capacity depends on the raw material used, on the filler content and on the porosity of the paper. The filler content is kept small when non-combustible papers are used. The following general comment can be made on this subject: highly combustible paper is milky white: a cigarette with such a paper burns quickly when left to its own devices. Non-combustible paper allows to see the tobacco through. A cigarette with non-combustible paper extinguishes when it is not smoked. Semi- or non-combustible paper is used intentionally in Eastern Europe (USSR).Termes :
