Latakia is a very low growing small-leaved tobacco produced in Syria. The whole plant is harvested and cured on an open fire with abundant smoke formation; this produces the special spicy and smoke-like aroma without the tobacco undergoing real fermentation. Because only certain branches with leaves adhering to them were used for such fire-curing, the government was compelled to prohibit this type of tobacco preparation in order to prevent illicit farming in Syrian forest. Similar tobaccos are also grown on Cyprus but not of quite so good a quality. Latakia is mixed mainly with English pipe tobaccos.
